Erin's Avon Walk for Breast Cancer PledgePage
Hello. Thank you for taking the time to visit my PledgePage. My name is Erin Gourley and I have committed myself to raising at least $1,800.00 and walking 39.3 miles in the 2004 New York City Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on October 2-3. This is not going to be an easy task but I am extremely excited about it.
Unfortunately, most of us have been affected by this terribly deadly disease in one way or another. With your help, we can win the battle against breast cancer. Here are a few frightening statistics:
-Between 1973 and 1999, breast cancer incidences increased by about 40%.
-A woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing invasive breast cancer. In 1975, the chances were 1 in 11.
-Every 3 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Every 14 minutes breast cancer claims another life.
-This year alone, approximately 40,000 woman will die from this terrible disease.
-An estimated 3 million women are living with breast cancer. What's worse is that 1 million of them don't even know it yet.
-An estimated 1,500 new cases of breast cancer are found in men each year.
Risk of Developing Breast Cancer by age:
By 25- 1 in 19,608
By 35- 1 in 622
By 45- 1 in 93
By 55- 1 in 33
By 65- 1 in 17
By 75- 1 in 11
BUT THERE IS HOPE!!!
-Between 1990 and 1997, the mortality rates of breast cancer significantly declined.
-There is a 97% survival rate when breast cancer is caught before spreading to other parts of the body.
